Job Introduction

William Grant & Son’s Operational Business Unit (OBU) operates at the heart of our business, responsible for the operation of distilling and packaging sites throughout Scotland and the world. As an OBU board director, the HR Director will proactively work with senior stakeholders to ensure they are supported in developing a high performing organisation.

Main Responsibility

As the leading business partner in the business unit, you’ll ensure that HR is working closely with business leaders to manage key organisational, people and management issues, encompassing both practical advice on HR matters and developing an employee-oriented, open and collaborative culture. In this increasingly global role, and as an OBU board director, you’ll also have the opportunity contribute to the running of the business in a broader sense than HR alone.

 

Some of your main accountabilities will include:

 

  • Ensuring the implementation of effective HR policies, principles, and standardised processes, including tools and templates
  • Proactively working to improve efficiency and productivity. Support, advise and challenge respective BU team leaders in all related matters
  • Proactively leading and monitoring talent development in order to develop high-performing teams and meet the long-term people needs of the business, with specific focus on relevant leadership and functional requirements, working closely with central Talent
  • Ensuring team leaders are actively supported by HR to recruit the best possible talent with strong skills, experience and potential through rigorous standard processes, including competency-based interviewing, and to effectively onboard new employees, working closely with central Talent
  • Ensuring realistic succession plans are worked out with team leaders in close coordination with central Talent, and the strength of people resources in the respective BU is built through effective and efficient progression and succession processes, including strong performance management
  • Ensuring that team leaders are supported in the best possible way with the delivery of tailored and practical L&D programmes in order to enable employee personal development, and ensuring the business has the required competencies and capacity available at the right time to maximize added value, working closely with central L&D
  • Monitoring remuneration in the assigned BUs, get ahead of the curve in terms of issues, actively manage employee understanding of the competitiveness of Company pay policies, and ensure people receive appropriate compensation that is aligned to the long-term Company Objectives, working closely with central Reward
  • Overseeing respective BU team leaders in building and maintaining strong employee relations and encouraging employee engagement, and ensure support from the HR team as needed

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Proven senior leader who can set objectives, performance manage a team and motivate and develop individuals to achieve their full potential.
  • Strong generalist HR background with a strong emphasis on employment law provisions, performance management, talent development, succession planning and employee engagement.
  • Some or all of this experience is likely to have been gained in an operations/manufacturing/FMCG environment, including union/collective groupings

 

  • Effective communicator, with the ability to make a positive impact at all levels of the organisation.
  • Confident influencing at all levels
  • Commercially aware, with a focus on creating and delivering pragmatic solutions to business issues
